Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew Attends the UN Friends of Vision Summit Breakfast at UNGA 78

Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Hon. Dr. Terrance M. Drew, embarked on his first day at the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) by attending the United Nations Friends of Vision Summit Breakfast. During the event, he reaffirmed his commitment to global initiatives that promote eye health and visual well-being. The Friends of Vision group, consisting of representatives from over 50 countries, aims to enhance access to quality eye care, prevent avoidable blindness, and promote visual health on a global scale. This coalition brings together governments, organizations, and leaders from various sectors to advocate for vision care, recognizing its profound impact on sustainable development and quality of life.

In his address, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, known for his unwavering dedication to healthcare accessibility, emphasized the significance of international cooperation in tackling visual health challenges. He drew attention to the fact that the world faces numerous complex issues, with Small Island Developing States often bearing the brunt. He highlighted that vulnerable groups, such as the blind and differently abled individuals, disproportionately experience the consequences of our collective failure to invest in frameworks and projects that enable them to lead independent lives. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of providing education and professional opportunities for these groups.

Dr. Drew also underscored the transformative potential of vision care in advancing his nation’s Sustainable Island State agenda. Saint Kitts and Nevis, as part of its vision to become a Sustainable Island State and its commitment to Leaving No One Behind, plans to elevate the visibility of individuals living with visual disabilities. Under the framework of the Disability Services Unit established by the Ministry of the Elderly and Disabled, the country aims to establish partnerships that facilitate the teaching of Braille as part of its Special Education curriculum. This initiative would empower blind individuals to pursue professional careers and aspire to positions such as becoming a Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

The UN Friends of Vision Summit Breakfast served as a platform for leaders to exchange ideas, explore innovative approaches, and mobilize resources to advance global eye health. Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew’s participation at the event signifies his dedication to collaborative, multilateral efforts that foster positive change worldwide.
